About the Oil:  Rose essential oil or Rose Otto is a great luxury. 'Otto' is the term used to differentiate the steam distilled variety from the 'Absolute'.  This steam-distilled variety of rose comes from Rosa Damascena roses, grown and distilled in the well-known sacred Valley of the Roses in Bulgaria. By far this is our favorite of our rose offerings.

Rose oil has been traditionally been used for stimulating the mind and bringing balance and harmony to emotions. Rose makes a great skin oil for all skin types, especially for dry, sensitive, or aging skin. In aromatherapy, rose otto is thought to be the essential oil with the 'highest vibes'. Compared to the Absolute of the same species, the Otto is considered the more 'therapeutic'. Rose can be elevating to the mind and spirit, as the premier essential oil for opening the heart chakra. It may bring balance and harmony, or perhaps help one to overcome insecurities.

Bulgarian 'Damask' Roses have been cultivated since the 16th century and are considered to produce the finest quality of the flowers' essence. We were fortunate to experience the Rose Valley Festival in Kazanlak to observe this tradition first hand. We can attest to the fact the Bulgarians have a deep reverence for their rose cultivation. Roses are such a significant part of Bulgarian culture that the government oversees production to ensure purity of rose essential oils.

Aroma: Divinely sweet, rich, and deeply floral, Rose Otto differs from Rose Absolute in scent as well as chemical components. Rose Absolute is deeper, with more middle notes than high.

Blends with: Most other oils, particularly patchouli, cedarwood, bergamot, sandalwood, chamomile, and ylang-ylang.

Other insights: Though the rose is renowned for its fragrance, the flower actually contains very little aromatic oil by weight. Some 60,000 roses are needed to distill a single ounce of oil, or about 60 roses per drop.
